Principal's Welcome
I would like to warmly welcome all our new students and their families who have joined us this term, in particular, our new Reception classes at Two Wells and Evanston as they commence their educational journey with Xavier College.
Term 3, like all, will be very busy for all three campuses of the College, as our younger students settle into the routine of the school day and our senior students look towards 2024, with subject selections and discussions on their future career pathways.
I wish all our staff, students and families a wonderful Term.
Mark Flaherty
Principal
Important Changes to College Uniform from 2024
At its meeting on 23 May 2023, the College Board agreed that effective from the commencement of the 2024 school year, all students from Reception to Year 9 at all campuses of the College will wear the PE Uniform only.
The formal College Uniform will only be expected to be worn once students enter Years 10–12 (unless required by subject choice).
Please find below a copy of the letter previously sent to all families on 5 June 2023.
Uniform Shop - Price Updates
Following a review of uniform prices, it is advised that new uniform prices will come into effect Monday 4 September 2023. The last review of uniform pricing occured in October 2020. While we are forced to increase the prices of some uniform items, the College has been able to reduce the price of trackpants for Primary students, and hold the price of the blazer and rugby jumper.
St Vinnie's Winter Appeal
Once again, the generosity of the Xavier College Community has been displayed through our annual St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. Members of the three campuses were encouraged to donate good quality canned food or a monetary donation to help the local conference meet their increasing needs at this time of year.
Across the three campuses, over 8,000 cans were collected, as well as sizeable donations of new blankets of various sizes, gloves and beanies, and a cash donation to support the vital work of the local St Vinnie’s conference. We want to thank all members of the College community who supported this year’s appeal.

Thriving Minds Excursion
In Week 3, 20 students from our three College campuses embarked on a unique educational journey to the 'Thriving Minds' workshop at Concordia College. The day-long excursion was attended by a number of schools from around the Adelaide region and offered a unique chance for students to delve deeper into some age-old philosophical questions and to explore a learning format outside of the classroom.
The questions of the day, presented by Julie Arliss of Oxford University, included 'How do we know what is fair?', 'What should I do?' and, 'Is it always right to tell the truth?'.
The workshop challenged our students to work outside of their comfort zones and, over the course of the day, our students embraced these challenges with enthusiasm and understanding. They worked collaboratively with their peers, with students from other schools, and debated their opinions, demonstrating the college values of RUAH throughout.
As they returned to campus, the impact of the workshop was evident in their feedback about the day:
"This gives us a great tool to go head and make the world we want to see in future, rather than just accepting the way world is today." - Joseph Dwyer
"The day was thought provoking and made me more aware of other people's perspectives than ever. It also made me think really deeply about current society." - Aliyah Bockman
Our students returned with a deeper appreciation for the power of knowledge, the importance of collaboration, and the potential for growth that lies within each of them. Stay tuned for more updates on our students' remarkable education journeys at Xavier College.

Welcome to the Mid-Year Receptions!
We're excited to welcome our new mid-year Reception students and their families to the Xavier Evanston family! Transitions can be both exciting and slightly nerve-wracking, but rest assured that our dedicated teachers and staff are here to ensure a smooth and positive transition for your little ones. We're committed to creating a nurturing environment that fosters growth, curiosity, and a love for learning.
Exciting Incursions/Excursions Await!
This term, our students are in for a treat as they embark on various exciting excursions and/or incursions designed to enhance their learning experiences. We firmly believe that real-world experiences complement classroom lessons and ignite a deeper understanding of the world around us. Our students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge in meaningful ways, fostering a sense of curiosity and exploration.
Enriching Hearts and Spirits with Andrew Chinn's Workshop & Concert
Our campus had the immense pleasure of participating in faith-filled musical workshops led by the talented musician and songwriter, Andrew Chinn. With his inspiring melodies and meaningful lyrics, Mr Chinn guided our students through a journey of music, faith, and unity. During these workshops, our students learned and sang songs. The highlight of this musical journey was the whole school performance where our students showcased their newfound talents. It was a beautiful reminder of the power of music to bring us together and nurture our spirits.
Introducing Laura Cooper, Our College Defence Mentor
We're delighted to introduce Laura Cooper, our new College Defence Mentor, to the Xavier Community. Laura will be working closely with our students. We look forward to the positive impact she will have.

Evanston - Welcome Mid Year Receptions!
We warmly welcome the new Reception children and families to Xavier College, Evanston Campus. It was wonderful to witness the energy and excitement on their first day of school. Our mid-year Reception children had participated in our Transition to School 6-week program, where they started building relationships and getting to know our campus during Term 2. The friendships formed during the transition program have continued to strengthen during their first week of school. Well done, Receptions, we hope your start at Evanston has been rewarding!

Evanston - 100 Days of School
On the last day of Term 2, our Reception students celebrated 100 days of school! We started the day by sharing a song with the school at assembly, where we were also presented with special certificates. Celebrating our theme of '100 days brighter', there were 100 opportunities to be bright and happy throughout the day! We enjoyed a glow stick dance party, photo booth, bubbles, biscuit making, craft activities and more! Congratulations Receptions, on being '100 Days Brighter'!

Evanston - OSHC July Vacation Care
The first week of vacation care at Xavier College OSHC Evanston was nothing short of amazing! We kicked off the adventures with a thrilling visit to the zoo, where our young explorers had a roaring good time at the zoo. The children had an opportunity to discover many different animals from around the world.
The excitement continued as we took a trip to the swimming pools at Elizabeth Aquadome. The enthusiastic swimmers enjoyed a refreshing day at the pool, splashing, swimming and playing in the water. The water activity brought a sense of friendship and fun, making it a truly memorable day.
The fun didn’t stop there! The children’s problem-solving abilities were put to the test during an exhilarating escape room challenge. Working together as a team, they deciphered puzzles, cracked codes, and made their way out, feeling proud of their accomplishments.
As the second week unfolded, the excitement reached new heights! We held a ‘Goo Roo’ experience where the children amazed us with their incredible Lego creations. The children were immersed in the activity and showcased their imagination and creativity through their inventions.
In an effort to deepen our community connections, we hosted a special visit from the emergency services team. The children got up close and personal with the fire truck and police vehicles, whilst learning about the vital role these heroes play in keeping our community safe. The thrill of the week peaked with a heart-pounding game of laser tag! This experience provided an opportunity for the children to showcase their tactical skills and sportsmanship.
As we look back on the highlights of vacation care, Xavier College OSHC Evanston has been a place of laughter, and lasting friendships these holidays. We look forward to a new adventure with the children next school holidays.

Evanston - Maker's Empire Showcase
During Terms 1 and 2, Year 4 students from the Evanston campus embarked upon a Maker's Empire design challenge. We identified that our classroom chairs were not always conducive to effective learning and set about researching and designing our own chairs.
We looked at different chairs, their purposes and features. We then looked at our classroom chairs, identifying pros and cons before deciding upon a set of criteria we wanted our designed chairs to have.
In groups, we ideated different designs before choosing one to build a prototype cardboard model. After evaluating our models, we made changes and began designing our 3D chairs.
We had some difficulties when we first started printing, but we soon got the hang of it and our initial prints were complete. We tested and evaluated our models and then made a final print for the Showcase.
On Thursday 3 August, a small group of students attended the Makers Empire Showcase Day which was an opportunity for students and teachers to share and celebrate their design thinking projects with an authentic audience. Evanston Campus was given the award for best project as voted for by the CESA Education leaders. We were very excited to win the award and look forward to using the skills we have learnt in our further learning adventures.

Evanston - Year 1 Excursion to see 'Zooom'
This week, our Reception and Year 1 students travelled to Adelaide to see the ‘Zooom’ theatre performance at the Adelaide Festival Centre. We gave a ‘piece of the dark’ to the keepers and in exchange, we received a special light to help us during the show. We went on a journey as a lost star found its way home, marveled at the lights and lasers and even got to have a dance party in the show. Our Year 2 students are looking forward to attending next week. Thank you, Patch Theatre, for putting on another memorable performance!

Gawler Belt - Head of Campus
In Week 1 we celebrated the amazing talents of our students at our Academic Assembly. The Assembly acknowledged students academic achievements and their commitment to our community.
At the heart of our mission as a Catholic College in the tradition of St John Bosco lies the commitment to foster holistic development of each and every student – a journey that encompasses not only the nurturing of spiritual values but also the pursuit of excellence.
A Foundation for Lifelong Learning:
Academic excellence is not merely about achieving high grades; it is about cultivating a thirst for knowledge and a natural curiosity in the world around us that propels our students forward on a journey of lifelong learning. Our teachers here at Xavier College work tirelessly to instil in our students a passion for discovery, critical thinking, and problem-solving. These skills serve as a sound foundation, empowering each of our students with the ability to navigate the complexities of the world with confidence using their moral compass they develop as they journey through the College.
Embracing the Gift of Reason:
In our Catholic tradition academic excellence is a testament to the harmonious relationship between our beliefs and the pursuit of knowledge and understanding.
Preparation for Purposeful Service:
Our commitment to academic excellence extends beyond the classroom. It is a preparation for a life of purposeful service, where our students are equipped to make meaningful contributions to their communities and the wider world.
Working in Communion:
The pursuit of academic excellence is not the sole responsibility of schools alone; it is a collaborative effort that requires the active involvement of students, parents, caregivers and the entire learning community to work in communion.

Gawler Belt - Academic Assembly
To start Term 3, our Gawler Belt Campus held its Semester 1 Academic Assembly where Certificates for Academic Excellence were awarded to students. We believe that recognising academic excellence not only celebrates individual achievements but also inspires all our students to strive for their best. Congratulations to the award winners! We extend our appreciation to our dedicated parents/ caregivers, supporting and nurturing the growth of our students throughout their journey at the College.
Gawler Belt - Paint & Snack
Our Gawler Belt Campus hosted a captivating parent and student Cubist-inspired Paint and Snack workshop. Families immersed themselves, through bold brushstrokes and vivid colours they crafted unique artworks that blurred the lines between reality and imagination. This event not only fostered creativity but also strengthened bonds between parents and students from our three campuses, as they collaborated and learned from one another. The workshop's success echoes Xavier College's commitment to nurturing holistic development among its students and promoting wellbeing and positive education.

Gawler Belt - Year 12 Retreat
Last week, our Year 12 students went on their annual retreat, a full day experience at the Gawler Racecourse. The theme this year was based on a quote from Pope John Paul II, “Let us remember the past with gratitude, live the present with enthusiasm, and look forward to the future with confidence.” Students were guided through reflective and prayer activities to discern where they have been, where they are currently, and where they are heading in the future personally, socially, and spiritually.

Gawler Belt - Snow Trip
Recently, a group of our senior students ventured off to the slopes of Mount Hotham for the 2023 Snow Trip. Thanks to a plentiful amount of snowfall prior to arriving, the students quickly started familiarising themselves with the slopes. The students showed amazing resilience, determined to master their alpine skills, with most demonstrating a very competent level of skiing and boarding by weeks end. This year’s Snow Trip was an outstanding success with our students bonding over skiing, snowboarding and snowball fights, leaving them with a sense of accomplishment and joy from their thrilling snow experience.
Gawler Belt - Poetry in Action
The enchanting world of poetry came to life at our school – Gawler Belt Campus - when the renowned Australian poetry company, Poetry in Action, graced us with their mesmerizing performance. The Year 7 students from Gawler Belt, and Year 7s and 8s from Two Wells, were treated to a delightful and educational experience, as the talented troupe of performers led them on a journey through the five basic elements of poetry: rhyme, rhythm, repetition, sensory language and theme.
The excitement among the Two Wells students was clear as they eagerly gathered in the Gawler Belt campus auditorium, unsure of what to expect. Their laughs vibrated throughout the space as they helped performers play ‘Word Table Tennis’, laughed at the assonance of the poetry, and called out rhyme words as the performers rap battled.
Gawler Belt students got vigorously involved with the performance, cheering on and booing rap battle contestants, and really supporting the underdog on her journey to becoming a better poet and rapper.
Students embarked on a poetic adventure like never before. Poetry in Action did not disappoint; expertly blending education with entertainment, making poetry come alive in a way that captivated the young minds. What an amazing Entry Event into our Creating Poetry Unit of work!
The synergy between the performers and the students was remarkable, with the former encouraging the latter to explore their own creative potential. The students were actively involved throughout the performance, expressing their thoughts, and even contributing their original poetic lines when prompted.
The impact of Poetry in Action's performance has already extended far beyond the auditorium doors. In the weeks that followed, the Year 7 classrooms buzzed with newfound enthusiasm for poetry. With poetry's charm, minds reach new heights!

Gawler Belt - Tailem Bend Pedal Prix
Xavier College entered two teams in the eight hour Pedal Prix event held at Tailem Bend on Saturday 5 August. Teams were increased in number to enable added rotations to complete the extra two hours, hence we were not able to run a third vehicle in this event. The Tailem Bend track is large and fast, with enough space that 195 vehicles were able to race without too much crowding.
All teams were frustrated on the day because after an hour or two of really competitive riding, drizzling rain caused significant issues with visibility as windscreens were obscured by external water and internal vapour. Despite chemical treatment and frequent cleaning, it soon became necessary for windscreens to be removed which dramatically impacted the aerodynamic qualities of the vehicles. Our riders were impressive in the conditions, pushing on to the best of their ability. True resilience was shown by drenched and cold riders who pedaled hard despite the vehicle becoming a great deal more difficult to drive against wind resistance and incoming rain.
The College’s senior vehicle, Bosco 1, achieved 17th position in the Senior 3 field of 52 vehicles and 55th in field of 195. Well done Tom, Cameron, Rhyley, Eamon, Ethan, Daan, Owen and Elijah.
Bosco 2 was brought home in 45th position in the Senior 3 field. This is a valiant effort because competition rules dictate that this vehicle runs in the senior school category, yet most of the riders would normally race in the division below. We are very proud of Dean, William, Eddie, Julian, Oli, Aiden, Eli, Taylor, Blake and Harper.
Whilst the weather was against us, our vehicles performed perfectly throughout the day and apart from a minor issue resulting from a vehicle being rammed, all riders were able to fill their complete stint without losing time to repairs. Our boys enjoyed themselves despite the conditions, performing as well as they could in reduced visibility and coping with the wet without complaint.
Our next race is the 24 hour event at Murray Bridge. We encourage our boys to continue their training to improve their strength and fitness to cope with repeated stints necessary for this grueling event.

Gawler Belt - Soccer Tournament
The highly anticipated lunchtime soccer tournament made a triumphant return this year! From the very start, the games were nothing short of fantastic, keeping everyone on the edge of their seats throughout the entire term. In the junior competition, the Red Demons displayed their brilliance and emerged as the well-deserved champions. In the senior competition, Brad Bobbley's Soccer Camp showcased their sheer dominance and secured an incredible third consecutive tournament victory! Congratulations to all the player on a fantastic tournament.

Gawler Belt - Amazing Race
Years 7 and 8 students have been engaging in a Positive Education course during their PE lessons covering content such as resilience, growth vs fixed mindset, and leadership. Students completed an 'Amazing Race' where they displayed their skills of teamwork, communication, trust, resilience, growth mindset and humour. In teams of five or six, they completed seven challenges, including Minefield, Brainteasers, Xavier College Pictionary and more.
Mikaela Parnell, a Year 8 student who participate in the race shared:
“The race was so fun and amazing. There were critical and creative challenges which required my team to work together and communicate. We trusted each other to finish the race by completing the obstacles and challenges that came our way. Such a creative experience with so many laughs which I’ll never forget.”

Gawler Belt - Alberton Oval Visit
On Thursday 2 August we held our Senior Transport Excursion, which included a visit to Alberton Oval, home of the Port Adelaide Magpies. We were lucky to have a personal tour by former player David Hutton. Seth enjoyed seeing all the trophies the club has won, including winning six grand finals in a row, which is an Australian record. Danni liked seeing Port’s home ground, while Eddie, Callum and Keegan enjoyed seeing the history of the club and artifacts in the museum. Api also liked the museum, especially the fact that the team once forfeited a semifinal due to an umpire! Kam, Jayden, Shianne, and Jack all enjoyed watching the AFL team train, and Jack was impressed to see Aliir Aliir. Kaine enjoyed the Q&A session we had with the AFLW players Abbey Dowrick and Matilda Scholz.
After the tour we travelled to the City Centre, which was Bella’s favourite part of the day (KFC!). Blake enjoyed becoming more familiar with public transport, while Trent enjoyed getting out and about.
It was a great day out, and we celebrated our Year 12 students, as it is their last excursion with the group- Kaine, Seth, and Keegan.

Gawler Belt - Xavier College Ecologial Group
Last month, the opportunity arose for likeminded senior students to form a group that allows us to put our passion for looking after our school environment to good use. We came together to discuss strategies we could implement to improve the state of our school’s environment. These strategies ranged from small changes, such as helpful tips in recycling, to much larger changes.
This semester, our group has frequently discussed how many students struggle with recycling, due to an overall lack of education on the matter. OUR GOAL is to encourage students to implement recycling strategies into their lives, both within and outside of school.
As a group, we applied for the Student 'Call to Ecological Conversion and Action: Laudato Si' grant and were successful! Which will allow us to soon put our ideas in action!

What an incredible start to the term!
We have certainly started off with a bang, with lots of things happening across the campus.
Our new Reception students have commenced school, and are already firmly ensconced in the community. We are loving their energy, smiles and the way they have really taken to being, “big school kids.”
As you will see in this publication, our Year 2 students had a wonderful excursion to the Marine Discovery Centre at Henley Beach. Students had the opportunity to look at ecological sustainability, and talk about ways we can all contribute to protect the coastline. We appreciate the wonderful work of Ms Lisa Crossley and Ms Mia Langtry.
Our Year 9 cohort is the first group in the history of Xavier College to participate in The Rite Journey. Last week they experienced an outdoor education style camp that offered time for personal challenges and reflection. Students slept in tents, hiked, prepared their own food, participated in a high ropes challenge, and really worked together as a team. Thank you to Mr Nick Skewes, Ms Simone Dajeman, and Mr Nathan Clarke for their support of the students. I believe that showers and their own beds will not be taken for granted again!
The gymnasium is looking incredible, and the build continues to progress well. As you may know, our OSHC service will relocate there by the end of the year.
We are looking forward to catching up with families on 16 August for our SPOC interviews. Please reach out to us if you have any issues accessing the links to make a booking. Please bring your child/ren with you to the interviews; they should be in College uniform.
We would like to send a huge congratulations to Mr Ben Paparella, Emma, and Ivy on the safe arrival of their newest “Little Pap” Alfie. We wish the family of four the most wonderful days ahead.

Two Wells - Welcome Mid Year Receptions!
Our mid-year Receptions have beautifully settled into the routines of daily school life at our Two Wells Campus. Students have enjoyed spending time each morning immersed in play-based learning experiences, developing friendships and becoming familiar with their new classroom space. The first few weeks of school have also provided students with a valuable opportunity to begin the PreLit and Heggerty Phonological Awareness programs, which serve to develop and strengthen their early reading skills.
Demonstrating an eagerness to learn and participate in whole school activities, our mid-year Receptions have well and truly become a special part of our Xavier College Community. We look forward to watching them grow, learn and thrive!

Two Wells - 100 Days of School
On Friday 7 July, the Early Years R-2 classes at the Xavier College Two Wells Campus celebrated the 100th day of school this year. This is a highly anticipated event for our students who have been patiently counting the days towards this event in their classrooms. This year, our primary students got involved in the event as part of our Oratory during the morning.
Students were invited to dress up as either one-hundred-year-old people, decorate an item of clothing with 100 objects, or wear a piece of clothing with the number 100 on it. Our teachers discussed how we often associate our elders as being wise with the idea of dressing up as a 100-year-old person. It is a playful and entertaining way to celebrate that our students are now 100 days brighter, 100 days smarter and have experienced 100 school days of new learning.
Throughout the day, students participated in a wide variety of Maths and Literacy tasks centred around the number 100. They also successfully completed the 100 acts of RUAH challenge with the goal to collectively model 100 acts of our College values of Respect, Understanding, Affection and Humour by the 100th day of school.
Our Early Years R-2 teachers pride themselves on immersing our students in engaging and creative learning experiences. The 100th day of school provided another opportunity for our students to acknowledge and celebrate their learning achievements so far. It was a wonderful day spent together, capturing memories that can be shared and reflected on in the years to come.

Two Wells - NAIDOC Week
During Week 10, our Two Wells Campus celebrated NAIDOC Week by extending opportunities for our students to recognise and appreciate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. On Wednesday 5 July, our students generously purchased Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander donuts, with a portion of each sale going directly to the Tjindu Foundation.

Two Wells - Marine Discovery Centre
Recently, the Two Wells Year 2 classes visited the Henley Beach Marine Discovery Centre. Students spent the morning beachcombing, searching the shore of Henley Beach for ocean materials, different species of marine life and of course, built sandcastles with their peers!
Students then explored the Discovery Centre, where they observed different marine species, learnt how to take care of the Earth's natural resources, and explored the ocean floor using VR headsets.
"I enjoyed exploring shells, sea sponges, dead worms and red seaweed on Henley Beach. The ocean has lots of cool stuff to learn about.” - Lielah Watson
"I enjoyed using a VR set in the Marine Discovery Centre to explore the ocean floor, marine life and scuba divers.”- Derek Hobby.
"I liked checking out the Discovery Centre because I got to see lots of fish and marine life bones.” - Charlee Walsh.

Two Wells - Music is Fun
Rcently, the Music is Fun Band performed for the more junior students of the Two Wells Campus. A variety of students from Year 1 to Year 5 were involved with the Crazy Frog song and the Green Pea song. The Freddy Feelgood Funky Five-piece band stole the show with their energetic performance, and Car Wash was a wonderful ending to the set. The show was enjoyed by both staff and students alike.

Two Wells - Staff Professional Learning
Our Two Wells campus welcomed Dr Joanne Buckskin who is a tertiary educator of Narrungga, Wirangu Wotjobalok heritage. With her key teaching and research fields including Reconciliation and Education, Dr Buckskin spent time with our teachers as part of our staff Indigenous Education Professional Learning discussing the Indigenous and/or Torres Strait Islander educational goals, culturally responsive teaching and how we are promoting our college as a culturally safe school.
It was a valuable opportunity for teachers to engage in meaningful and insightful conversation with Dr Buckskin and Lorraine Lemmens, our College Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Coordinator, to discuss key teaching and cross curriculum opportunities.

Two Wells - Year 2 Paper Mache
As part of an integrated Humanities and Religion unit of work, our Two Wells Year 2 students showcased their creative talents to make 3D papier-mâché world globes. Students have been learning about the geographical continents of the world and ways they can care for creation. It was the first time using this technique for many of the students who persevered to combine an appropriate mix of glue and paper! After a sticky start, students were very pleased with their efforts and what they achieved.
